Godolphin’s Derby champ Adayar retired Jul 28, 2023

Godolphin’s homebred 2021 Epsom Derby winner Adayar has been retired from racing and is set to begin his career as stallion.

More details on where he will stand and at what price are yet to be finalised by his owners, but the decision to withdraw him from Saturday’s King George VI and Queen Elizabeth QIPCO Stakes at Ascot was followed by the announcement he will now be available on the blues’ stallion roster.

Trained by multiple British Champion Flat Trainer and retained Godolphin conditioner Charlie Appleby, Adayar earned a massive £1,920,217 during his time at the track, and became the first horse since his grandsire Galileo to complete the Derby and King George double in the same year.

The Godolphin homebred took the Epsom Classic by four and a half lengths, before powering to another big victory at Ascot in the King George. In completing the double, Adayar added his name to an illustrious list that includes Nijinsky, Mill Reef, Shergar, Nashwan, Generous, Lammtarra and Galileo.

Paying tribute to the 5yo son of Frankel, Appleby said: “Adayar provided the team with two outstanding days on the racecourse at Epsom and Ascot and has been a firm favourite in the yard for the past three seasons. He has been an absolute pleasure to train.

“He will be sorely missed at Moulton Paddocks but we look forward to watching him in his new career at stud and are quite sure he will be a huge success.”
