The growth, popularity and sustainability of horseracing in the UAE was highlighted at the recent 40th Asian Horse Racing Conference (ARC) held in Sapporo, Japan; one of the most prominent global events which brings together experts and specialists from the equine world.

The conference discussed the challenges facing horseracing globally, and the efforts made at the regional and international levels, with the aim of achieving sustainability and increasing the economic returns of this vital sector.

His Excellency Mohammad Saeed Al Shehhi, General Manager of the Emirates Racing Authority (ERA) and Vice-Chairman of the Asian Racing Federation, who attended the conference along with Ali Al Ali, Executive Director and Board Member of Dubai Racing Club showcased the UAE's achievements in the horse racing sector, stressing that the vision and support of the wise leadership are two main factors in the country’s leadership in this sector and in creating a stimulating environment for growth.

In a statement to Emirates News Agency (WAM), Mr Al Shehhi highlighted the pivotal role played by the UAE in the world of horse racing, pointing to the remarkable growth in the number of owners and trainers which saw a 16% increase from 2019 to 2024.

He noted that the financial prizes in horse racing in the country saw a growth of 6%, reflecting a remarkable development in this sector, at a time when other regions of the world face challenges that affect its growth.

The UAE has a modern legislative system for horse racing, which is committed to applying the highest standards of integrity and transparency, and contributes to developing systems and controls to keep pace with international standards, he added.

He said that the great efforts made by the Emirates Racing Authority during the past two years in this regard contributed to strengthening the country's position as the largest horse transport centre in the region.

Last year, he went on to say, witnessed the import and export of more than 5,500 horses, an increase of 9% over the previous year, which confirms the importance of the UAE as a major centre for the import and export of horses.

Attracting and engaging the foremost leaders and greatest minds in racing and sports, along with other influential stakeholders, the ARC shapes global and regional agendas to continuously advance the racing industry.
